Depression Book ‘Fighting Chance’ Wins Independently-Published Book Awards

Bayview, Idaho, June 3, 2021 — A phone call from a suicidal friend became a call to action for retired Air Force major general-turned science writer Sarah Zabel. After watching her friend endure more than 10 years of suicide attempts and ineffective treatment, Sarah researched and wrote Fighting Chance: How Unexpected Observations and Unintended Outcomes Shape the Science and Treatment of Depression — winning this year’s IndieReader Discovery Award (IRDA) in Psychology / Mental Health and earning a silver medal in the Independent Publisher Book Awards, same category.

IndieReader’s judges had this to say about Fighting Chance: “A comprehensive study of the history and science of depression, FIGHTING CHANCE examines the causes, symptoms, and treatments of this disease as research and understanding have evolved over time. Providing the perspectives of clinicians, researchers, and patients, FIGHTING CHANCE deftly illustrates the physical and emotional toll of depression on those who suffer from it. An essential addition to the library of anyone impacted by this disease.”

IndieReader launched the IRDAs in 2011 to help notable indie authors receive the attention of top publishing professionals, with the goal of reaching more readers. Noted Amy Edelman, author and founder of IndieReader, “The books that won the IRDAs this year are not simply great indie books; they are great books, period. We hope that our efforts via the IRDAs ensure that they receive attention from the people who matter most: potential readers.” The Independent Publisher Book Awards, now in their 25th year, are intended to bring increased recognition to the thousands of exemplary independent, university, and self-published titles published each year.

Author Sarah Zabel graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy with a degree in computer science in 1987 and was commissioned a second lieutenant. She retired from the Air Force in 2018 as a major general and decided to turn her focus to her life-long love of learning and become a science writer. Inspired, intrigued and frustrated by an enduring friend’s battle with depression, she set herself the task of first coming to understand, and then to explain for other lay-persons, the science behind that terrible illness. General Zabel does occasional consulting and other activities associated with her time as one of the military’s leaders in cyberspace operations and security, in the provision of communications and other services to warfighters, and leadership of a diverse workforce.
